“The Waiting Game”
The series focuses on stories of several patients on waiting lists for heart transplants, and ultimately a successful transplant. Mr. Dare’s work puts the alarming lack of commitment to organ donation and the need for a national effort at the forefront of our minds. Written in laymen’s terms, this series dispels myths about organ donation and describes the meaning of concepts such as brain death, which could conquer fears about donation and essentially save lives.
The deadline for the 2008 awards has now passed. Winners will be announced at the Award Dinner on April 13 in Halifax.
Submission Criteria:
Joan Hollobon was a medical reporter for the Toronto Globe and Mail for 25 years until her retirement in 1986. During that time she acquired a reputation as a master of the art and science of medical reporting, a tradition that continues today. In honour of Joan, the Hollobon Award is presented annually by HCPRA Canada to members of the media whose work has contributed significantly to the public's understanding of health care.
HCPRA members and media outlets are invited to nominate media representatives whose work has appeared in print or been broadcast on radio or television since January 2007 and has not been submitted for consideration for a previous Hollobon Award. The entry fee is $75. Cheques should be payable to HCPRA. Visa and MasterCard are also accepted.
The entry deadline for the 2008 Hollobon Award is Friday, February 29, 2008. Sorry, no exceptions.
The primary focus of all articles, radio and television clips and/or programs submitted for this award should be educational and should feature:
a) an illness and/or condition;
b) new or different treatment methods;
c) new developments in health care research, technology, funding or similar issues.
Print - Submit three copies of the article, clearly identifying the name(s) and telephone number(s) of the author(s) and the name and date of the publication in which the article appeared.
Radio and Television - Submit three videos, CDs or DVDs, clearly identifying the names of the program and host(s) if applicable, the name of the reporter and producer if different from the host, as well as the broadcasting company and the name and telephone number of a contact person.
For each nomination, please provide a short letter describing the media piece and why it is important in terms of health care reporting. Please provide the name and full contact information of the journalist and the person submitting the nomination (if not the same person).
